The Asylum presents…

The Pharmacy

When I was thinking about how I wanted The Asylum to grow, I didn’t really see the whole residency thing taking off, but I am glad it has because it has given me the opportunity to engage in meaningful printmaking with artists who have a real burning desire to experience the medium.  It gives me the chance to problem solve in ways I haven’t before and to welcome new appreciators into this wild world of printmaking.  So how does The Pharmacy fit in?

In its first iteration, The Pharmacy served as an online gateway to find everything Asylum from pins to prints, pages for each of The Residents and information about the editions I’ve published so far. Now, we are in phase two, bringing The Pharmacy from the web to the wild.

I have set up shop on Richmond’s southside in Studio XXX at ArtWorks on Hull Street. I will be here most days, working on clean hands projects, curating Asylum shows and even hosting monthly Salons as a way to keep focus on creative conversation in our community.  Please keep up to date with happenings, openings and other ways to interact with me in person on my In The Wild page

The Asylum Salon

Something that consumes my thoughts regularly is how vital the meeting of artists to talk about art and have some crit can be. Not only can it help you make better work to engage in critical conversation, but it can also help you develop a closer relationship and understanding of the language art speaks.  Acknowledging the formal elements and how they contribute to the success of a piece is vital to understanding how people process what they see when you release your creations into the world. Come by The Pharmacy the 2nd and 4th Friday of each month, and lets get intentional about our evolution. All mediums welcome, emphasis on print. Free to the public.

The Pharmacy will also serve as an installation incubator space.  During each residency, the artists will have access to this space to kind of trial run how they will want to display their work.  The Pharmacy will help them answer questions like glazed or unglazed? What size margins does this print desire?  What kind of experience can I create for the viewers?  At the end of their stay at The Asylum each artist will have the opportunity to hang a show and host an opening to debut the work we created together. For some artists, the act of releasing their work into the public with an opening is integral to their creative process so I am stoked to offer that possibility as part of their residency.

New Curatorial Opportunities

Installation Incubation

The Pharmacy will provide space to showcase all the things coming out of The Asylum. It will give me a space to put up works in progress and get some feedback as well as display finished works and new explorations. Artists and collectors alike will be able to interact with me to plan projects, consult about adorning walls, drop off cigar box sessions and more, without setting up a specific studio visit. As I get the space more set up I will post my hours and events, so stay tuned!
